Photorefractive properties of undoped lithium tantalate crystals for various composition

Abstract: Lithium tantalate crystals of compositions ranging from 48.3 mol % to 50.0 mol % lithium oxide are fabricated by vapor transport equilibration. Light-induced refractive index changes of the crystals are investigated with holographic methods at usual cw-laser intensities ͑Ϸ10 5 W/m 2 ͒ and with a single focused laser beam at high light intensities up to 2 ϫ 10 7 W/m 2. In stoichiometric crystals the index changes are reduced by more than two orders of magnitude when compared with congruently melting ones. Simul… Show more

“…7 Near-stoichiometric crystals have been shown to have dramatically reduced intrinsic defect concentrations, and dramatically reduced susceptibility to PRD. 8 This has enabled the demonstration of efficient and stable frequency conversion at high average and high peak powers at near-room temperature. 9 In this article, we describe the effects of VTE on important optical and ferroelectric properties of LT, and their impact on domain engineering for frequency conversion applications.…”

“…Furthermore, single-domain LiNb 3 O 8 crystals were studied. The C Li values were estimated by precision measurements of the fundamental absorption edge, the birefringence, the temperature where the birefringence disappears as well as by measuring the linewidth of phonon bands in the Raman spectra of all the samples [2,10,11]. All these methods yield a compositional resolution of 0.05 mol% Li 2 O.…”

“…We have investigated nominally pure single domain LiNbO 3 and LiTaO 3 crystals with different compositions: 9 LiNbO 3 samples with lithium concentrations C Li ranging from 48.4 mol% (congruently melting crystals) to 49.96 mol% (nearly stoichiometric composition obtained by vapor-transport-equilibration (VTE) technique [2]), and 5 LiTaO 3 samples with C Li ranging from 47.2 mol% (so-called under congruent composition [10]) to 49.97 (nearly stoichiometric composition). Among these there are two nearly stoichiometric LiNbO 3 samples fabricated by the two different techniques: K 2 O-assited growth [11,12] and doublecrucible method [13,14].…”
