Physisorption of Poly(ethylene glycol) on Inorganic Nanoparticles

Abstract: Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is the most widely used polymer to decorate inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) by the “grafting-to” method for antifouling properties. PEG also shows diverse supramolecular interactions with nanoparticle surfaces and polar molecules, suggesting that the physisorption between PEG chains and NPs cannot be ignored in the “grafting-to” process. However, the effect of physisorption of PEG to NPs on the process of chemisorption has been rarely studied. Herein, we report that unfunctionalized … Show more

“…The silica layer endows the GNRs with high thermal stability, maintaining the shape and physical properties at a polymerization temperature of 70 °C . The silica layer also circumvents potential physisorption of polymer chains to the GNRs, observed even for PEG chains, and also in this study for PMSEA chains. ζ-Potential analysis of the GNRs was performed to investigate the change in surface charge of the silica-coated GNRs at each synthetic step (Figure S1).…”

“…In addition, ultrasonication can improve the grafting efficiency. As shown in literature, the grafting of thiol-terminated ligands to AuNPs is fast and the grafting density of polymer ligands can reach a high level in several minutes . Similar results were found in the grafting reaction between PMMA-TL and AuNPs, as shown in Figure S14.…”

“…As shown in literature, the grafting of thiolterminated ligands to AuNPs is fast and the grafting density of polymer ligands can reach a high level in several minutes. 32 Similar results were found in the grafting reaction between PMMA-TL and AuNPs, as shown in Figure S14. When the grafting solution was treated by ultrasonication for 10 min, the grafting density of AuNP@PMMA-TL could reach 0.35 chains/nm 2 , which was almost the same as that kept undisturbed for 1 h (0.34 chains/nm 2 ).…”

“…PEGylation is widely used for the surface modification of inorganic nanoparticles to offer their antifouling properties for bioapplications, generally through chemical grafting-to reactions. Prof. Zhongyuan Lu, Kun Liu, and collaborators revealed the unexpected physisorption between poly(ethylene glycol) and surface ligands of nanoparticles and provided new insights into the “loop-train-tail” conformations on the nanoparticles …”
