Phytochemical profile, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of extracts obtained from erva-mate (Ilex paraguariensis) fruit using compressed propane and supercritical CO2

Abstract: Traditionally, Ilex paraguariensis leaves are consumed in tea form or as typical drinks like mate and terere, while the fruits are discarded processing and has no commercial value. The aim of this work to evaluate phytochemical properties, total phenolic compounds, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of extracts of Ilex paraguariensis fruits obtained from supercritical CO 2 and compressed propane extraction. The extraction with compressed propane yielded 2.72 wt%, whereas with supercritical CO 2 1.51 wt% wa… Show more

“…In addition, the use of propane required a shorter extraction time than extraction with carbon dioxide, due to the high solubility of oil in this solvent . Furthermore, as noted by Fernandes et al, with propane, it is possible to work at relatively lower pressures, which may be more advantageous in relation to lower capital investments and operating costs.…”

“…The main drawback of scCO 2 is low polarity, which makes the extraction of polar alkaloids difficult, nevertheless, some alkaloids have been extracted using pure scCO 2 . [82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89][90][91][92][93][94][95] Therefore, a co-solvent (or modifier) must be added to make the SFC more polar and to solubilize polar or semipolar alkaloids. The proportion of co-solvent must be small to reach supercritical conditions.…”

“…Moreover, IP fruits are under investigation for producing value-added compounds. Currently, IP fruits are completely neglected and discharged with no commercial value [14]. Indeed, functional feed supplements have the potential of partial substitution and minimization of the use of many drugs in animal husbandry [15].…”
