In thepresent investigation isolation of chemical compounds was carried out from the aerial part of Silene tomentella, an evergreen member of the family Caryophyllaceae, using column chromatography. Identification of chemical compounds was done by various MP, TLC, IR, NMR techniques. The presence of the bioactive compound D-pinitol in this plant is being reported for the first time. Under the influence of D-pinitol, a clear tendency towards normalization of the glycogen content in the liver was also noted (it was only 10.4% lower than in intact animals). In the liver of animals, a rather sharp decrease in the content of glycogen was noted – by 63.5%, and a decrease in the activity of enzymes of the antioxidant defense of the body, characteristic of developing diabetes: SOD – by 35.1, and catalase – by 32.4%. Prophylactically – therapeutic administration of D- pinitol, which exhibits a pronounced ability to inhibit free radical oxidation processes.

In the present study, six known compounds were investigated that were isolated from the aerial parts of plant Dianthus helenae Vved. The structures of these compounds were identified as polypodine B (1), 2,3,20,22-diacetonide-20-hydroxyecdysone (2), 20-hydroxyecdysone (3), cyasterone (4), αecdysone (5) and 2-deoxy-α-ecdysone (6). Their structures were confirmed by NMR-, ESI-MS, and IR-spectroscopy. The compounds ( 5) and ( 6) are reported for the first time from this species. Furthermore, compounds (2) and ( 4) were isolated for the first time from the Caryophyllaceae family. In addition, all these phytoecdysteroids were investigated for a nootropic activity. Thus, the total phytoecdysteroids-containing preparation at a dose of 25 mg/kg increases two times the motor activity, an approximate reaction -four times and exploratory behavior -1.4 times compared to control animals.

This study reports the isolation of steroid glycosides and cycloartane glycosides from the aerial parts of Silene tomentella. Two cycloartans group of triterpenoids astrasieversianin II (1) and cycloastragenol (4), including two compounds belonging to steroid glycosides lokundjoside (2) and lineolon (3) are known, were isolated from the aerial part of S. tomentella by chromatographic techniques (CC, TLC, HPTLC). Their structures were established based on extensive spectroscopic analyses and chemical methods, including NMR (1D and 2D) and HR-ESI-MS data. All of these compounds were obtained for the first time for this plant. In addition, the antimicrobial activities of triterpene and steroid glycosides were evaluated against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis as well as fungi Candida albicans. There was no evidence of antimicrobial action in the isolated triterpene glycosides and steroid glycosides against used microorganisms
