Placenta previa, maternal smoking and recurrence risk

Abstract: In order to assess the risk of placenta previa among women who smoked during pregnancy and to study the recurrence risk of placenta previa. we analyzed data from the Swedish Medical Birth Registry. Among 1.825.998 infants of women delivered in 1973-1990. 5.683 had placenta previa registered. The overall incidence of placenta previa was 0.3%. the incidence in twin deliveries was also 0.3X. The recurrence rate of placenta previa was 2.4O/0, which is an eightijld increase compared with the rate of a placenta prev… Show more

“…This is consistent with earlier studies where multiparity is reported as a risk factor. [3][4][5][6]13 In our study 41patients had history of previous cesarean sections accounting to 73.2%. Previous cesarean section has been reported as the most common risk factor for Placenta Previa in earlier studies also.…”

“…Placenta previa is one of the most common examples of impairment in placental vasculature development. Several studies have shown an association between increased incidence of placenta previa and the dose of tobacco consumed [45] . However, the exact mechanism whereby PMSE induces placenta previa remains speculative.…”

“…For example, case control studies using Washington State birth certificate data estimated that smokers during pregnancy have twice the risk of placenta praevia, a relationship confirmed in a cohort study from the Swedish Medical Birth Registry that examined records of 1.8 million deliveries in that country from [1973][1974][1975][1976][1977][1978][1979][1980][1981][1982][1983][1984][1985][1986][1987][1988][1989][1990] [7,8]. An increase in the odds of premature rupture of membranes associated with smoking has been estimated between 1.6 and 2.1 [9,10].…”
