The exponential rise in plastic usage without adequate waste management has a detrimental effect on the ecosystem. This study estimated the density of plastic waste encountered, including: macroplastic (>25 mm); mesoplastic (5-25 mm) and microplastic (1-5 mm) in the coastal environments of northern Ambon Island. The samples were collected in April of 2018. Two quadrats were used for the sampling. On two beaches in northern Ambon Island, the average amount of marine plastic debris was 0.492 item.m−2 for macroplastic (>25 mm), 10.8 item.m−2 for mesoplastic (5-25 mm), and 29.8 item.m−2 for microplastic (1-5 mm). The dominance of plastic-type for macroplastics was a film that comes from food/beverage packaging and single-use plastic bags. Both coastlines were rated as moderate according by the the Clean Coast Index (CCI) evaluation for macroplastic, implying that a few pieces of trash can be spotted. We recommend more innovative waste management and implementing an effective pollution law system in Ambon Island. A routine beach clean-up activity at the lowest government level would be an excellent campaign to protect the coastal area.

Pengetahuan tentang sampah, polusi, dan dampaknya merupakan hal yang sangat penting untuk diberikan kepada masyarakat, dan hal ini penting untuk ditanamkan pada anak-anak karena lebih mudah dibentuk karakternya. Dampak pencemaran limbah akan dialami oleh setiap generasi baik dalam jangka pendek maupun jangka panjang. Cara sederhana dan praktis untuk mengelola pencemaran limbah, khususnya sampah plastik, adalah dengan membuat eco-bricks. Ini adalah cara mudah yang dapat dilakukan oleh anak-anak. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memperkenalkan tentang sampah laut dan penanganan sampah plastik berbasis pembuatan eco-bricks kepada siswa Sekolah Minggu. Kegiatan tersebut dilaksanakan pada Kamis, 20 April 2023, dengan melibatkan para siswa Sekolah Minggu Pelayanan Sekolah Minggu (SMTPI) Sektor Latta Jemaat GPM Rumahtiga yang berlokasi di Desa Airlouw Ambon. Metode yang diterapkan dalam kegiatan ini adalah demonstrasi, pelatihan, dan ceramah untuk pengayaan materi, serta evaluasi dengan memberikan pertanyaan seputar pencemaran dan cara penanggulangannya. Peserta dibagi menjadi beberapa kelompok, dan peserta ditugaskan untuk menyelesaikan skema tentang perjalanan sampah di lingkungan mulai dari aktivitas manusia hingga dampaknya ke perairan dan manusia itu sendiri, kemudian dilatih pembuatan eco-bricks. Peserta juga dibekali pengetahuan terkait jenis sampah dan proses degradasinya. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa hanya sebagian peserta yang paham dengan pengolahan sampah berbasis eco-bricks. Namun, mereka mudah menerapkan prosesnya. Keberhasilan kegiatan dapat diukur secara langsung melalui proses diskusi yang dilakukan secara bersamaan selama proses pelatihan. Secara keseluruhan, pendidikan yang dilengkapi dengan pengayaan materi dan skema tugas dapat melatih kemampuan berpikir anak, dan metode praktis untuk mengelola sampah sangat penting untuk usia muda.

The coastal area has experienced significant changes of waste problems over the past few years. To resolve the waste problems in coastal areas, an understanding of community perception is needed to support government efforts. Therefore, this study aims to review people’s perspectives on the dynamics of waste in the coastal areas. Community perception data were compiled through semi-structured interviews with the surrounding communities in coastal areas. ArcGIS and load count analysis were used to analyze the waste density. Waste was collected from the coastal area in Ambon Bay and analyzed using waste density calculation and spatial analysis. The results show that the total waste density obtained at the coastal area of Ambon Bay is 0.249 kg/m2, of which 0.078 kg/m2 is the density of plastic waste, and 0.171 kg/m2 is the density of non-plastic waste. Communities in coastal areas have made efforts to deal with waste problems, but the efforts made are still ineffective in overcoming these problems. That problem happens because there is a lack of knowledge of the community and lack of infrastructure in coastal areas. The research results have the potential for replication in other coastal areas and are used as the basis of decision making for waste management improvement.
