Political Leaders in the APP Ecosystem

Abstract: This article analyzes the process of symbolic and critical-discursive construction of applications developed for mobile devices for some of the world’s most important heads of state through their manifestation in the ecosystem of mobile applications for iOS and Android. The sample includes 233 applications of 45 politicians from 37 countries. A content analysis-based method was applied to the discourse of these apps and users’ comments. The results reveal the dominant discourses in this scenario and identify t… Show more

“…This abundance of misinformation games is perhaps not surprising. It appears that game developers are aware of current social and political upheaval about the influence of fake news and social media and incorporate these issues into their games as a way to appeal to players and attract attention (Quevedo-Redondo et al, 2022;Morejón Llamas, 2023). After analyzing the sample, it became clear that many game developers use terms such as "disinformation, " "literacy" or "fake news" loosely, as a strategy to reach the desired audience.…”

“…This "significative break," in Bogost's terms, intensified since the 2015 US presidential election when a wide range of newsgames appeared on mobile devices, "becoming an integral part of political discourse strategies" where "the boundaries between satire, humor, and primitive insult are blurred" (Meier, 2018, p. 431). This build-up of the political sphere in the mobile ecosystem has been developed in recent research about politicians (Quevedo-Redondo et al, 2021) and political processes (Gil-Torres et al, 2022).…”
