Poly(m-aminobenzene sulfonic acid) functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes based gas sensor

Abstract: We have demonstrated a NH 3 , NO 2 and water vapour sensor based on poly(m-aminobenzene sulfonic acid) functionalized single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT-PABS) networks. The SWNT-PABS based sensors were fabricated by simple dispersion of SWNT-PABS on top of prefabricated gold electrodes. SWNT-PABS sensors showed excellent sensitivity with ppb v level detection limits (i.e., 100 ppb v for NH 3 and 20 ppb v for NO 2) at room temperature. The response time was short and the response was totally reversible. The se… Show more

“…PABS-SWNT is a water-soluble nanotube-polymer compound, formed by covalently bonding the polymer (PABS) to SWNTs via amide functionalization [7]. The utilized functionalized PABS-SWNTs are 1.1 nm in diameter and 0.5-1 m in length.…”

“…By introducing different chemical groups to the nanotube wall, it is possible to change the interaction between nanotubes and the surrounding environment. This reactivity could enhance the sensitivity and selectivity of CNT-based gas sensor devices [19], [20].…”

“…SWCNTs covalently attached to poly(m-amino benzene sulfonic acid) (SWCNT-PABS) showed improved sensor performance for the detection of NH 3 at 5 ppm level [12]. Zhang et al [13] have pushed the detection limit further to parts per billion level (100 ppb for NH 3 and 20 ppb for NO 2 ) using similar surface modification (SWCNT-PABS) [14]. Qi et al showed that non-covalent functionalization by drop casting nafion onto SWCNT-FETs resulted in gas sensors not only with improved sensitivity but also with great selectivity for NH 3 [14].…”

“…Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been predominantly used due to their superior electrical conductivity and higher sensitivity relative to multiwalled carbon nanotubes [9]. To realize a sensing system with high sensitivity, we utilized functionalized SWNT's in order to enhance the gas detection sensitivity (see [10] for details about functionalized SWNTs). Unlike other work where the SWNTs are grown on special substrates through a costexpensive process in clean rooms [11][12][13], we incorporate the SWNTs through ink-jet printing.…”
