(Poly)phenols in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Review

Abstract: (Poly)phenols (PPs) may have a therapeutic benefit in gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The aim of this review is to summarise the evidence-base in this regard. Observational evidence does not give a clear indication that PP intake has a preventative role for IBD or IBS, while interventional studies suggest these compounds may confer symptomatic and health-related quality of life improvements in known patients. There are inconsistent re… Show more

“…Abundant amounts of vegetables and fruits is a property of MD, which are not only rich in dietary fibers and micronutrients, but also the source of biophenols. Pomegranate, curcumin, bilberry anthocyanin, apple, mango, naringenin, ginger, and green tea showed potential therapeutic effects for IBD in some interventional studies [ 127 , 128 ]. In addition, olive oil is a special component in MD compared with other diet patterns and accounts for the majority of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of MD [ 128 ].…”

“…Further, several studies have investigated the potential direct therapeutic benefits of PCs in IBD. Although current data on PCs for treating IBD do not exhibit consistent effectiveness [33], several studies using curcumin for both UC and CD have generated promising results [23,34]. Several natural PCs have been known to exert beneficial effects against various diseases, in addition to their intrinsic antioxidant and scavenging properties [35,36].…”

“…In clinical studies investigating the efficacy of polyphenols in IBD patients, promising results of polyphenols and phenolic compounds such as anthocyanin, resveratrol, epigallocatechin-3-gallate including foods rich in polyphenols (e.g., red wine, green tea and ginger) on various markers of inflammation, IBD-related symptoms and measures of disease activity have also been reported, although the number of studies is limited ( 119 ).…”

“…Despite the limited number of intervention studies investigating the efficacy of polyphenols in IBD patients, particular interest has been devoted to the hydrophobic polyphenolic compound curcumin, and to date, curcumin may be the most investigated polyphenol in IBD patients due to its potentially clinical therapeutic anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory effects ( 119 ).…”
