Polynuclear branched tetrazole systems. 3. Acidity of α,ω-ditetrazol-5-ylalkanes

Abstract: α,ω-Ditetrazol-5-ylalkanes with 1 to 5 methylene groups in the alkyl fragment display the properties of dibasic heterocyclic NH acids with pK a values lying in the range 3.4-6.1. The pK a values of these compounds are in a linear dependence on the values of the dielectric permeability of the medium, on the chemical shifts of the signals of the endocyclic carbon atom, and of the carbon atom of the α-methylene group in the 13 C NMR spectra. It is known that multibasic carboxylic acids are efficient ligands for bi… Show more

“…Chelating bis(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)methane 1 was synthesized through a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between the commercially available malononitrile and sodium azide as previously reported by Ostrovskii et al (Scheme 1). 39 1 was then deprotonated with different bases to give bistetrazolate dianionic ligands 1a and 1b, which were successfully exploited as bidentate ancillary ligands to prepare three differently cyclometalated anionic iridium(III) complexes, 2− 4 (Scheme 2).…”

“…One route is the cyclization of malononitrile with sodium azide and dimethylammonium chloride in DMF under reflux. However, purification of the product is complicated . A better route is the [2 + 3] cycloaddition reaction of sodium azide with malononitrile catalyzed by zinc bromide in water according to a modified literature procedure at a temperature of 110 °C (Scheme ).…”

“…The transition metal(II) complexes 2 – 9 were prepared by combining solutions of di(1 H -tetrazol-5-yl)methane ( 1 ) and metal(II) salts in the corresponding acid at room temperature (Scheme ). Due to the acidic character of the ligand (p K a 1 = 3.42, p K a 2 = 5.30), diluted acids were chosen as solvent for the reaction in order to prevent precipitation of the corresponding metal tetrazolate salts. This strategy ensures the incorporation of the neutral nitrogen-rich ligand to build up cationic or neutral complexes with oxidizing anions like nitrates or perchlorates to produce more sensitive energetic materials as possible alternatives for heavy metal free primary explosives.…”
