“…Over 90% cell confluence was observed at the highest concentration (50 μg/mL), even for GO. This is, however, in accordance with previous findings, 77 where more than 87% HT-29 cell viability was observed for graphene. A similar finding was also observed for other types of cancer cells such as HeLa cancer cells, 78 where cell viability of 90% was observed for GO at 40 μg/mL.…”

“…As can be seen from Figures 8 and 9, the hydrophilic GO and ginseng-rGO films exhibited better attachment and higher proliferation, in contrast with the hydrophobic PDMS substrate and the hydrazine-rGO film. This can be attributed to higher biocompatibility of the GO and ginseng-rGO films, due to the presence of the oxygen groups on GO and ginsenosides on surface of the rGO sheets (as previously observed for high attachment of SW48 cancer cells to rGO sheets reduced and functionalized by polyphenols of green tea [89]). It should be nothed that, cyto-and even geno-toxicity of graphene sheets is mainly assigned to i) the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by graphene at high concentrations (~100 μg/mL) and/or ii) the direct contact interaction of extremely sharp edges of graphene with membrane and even nucleus of cells [8,90,91].…”

“…Recent publications have shown the interesting potential of GO for PTT applications (see Table 1 ) 28 , 36 , 61 - 64 , 81 - 84 , 95 - 109 . PTT has been reported either alone 95 , 98 , 99 , 105 , 108 - 110 or in combination with drugs 36 , 61 , 62 , 64 , 82 , 104 , 111 or with PDT 102 , 103 , 106 or in both ( Figure 2 B) . Photosensitizing agents are employed in PTT to generate heat from light absorption, leading to photoablation of cancer cells and subsequent cell death.…”

“…Robinson et al 95 used rGO non covalently PEGylated and conjugated to a peptide for targeting and selective photoablation of cancer cells at a low doses. Abdolahad et al 99 used rGO linked to the aromatic rings of green tea. Green tea is well known for its possible anticancer activity; indeed its polyphenol groups could be bound to cancer cell surface receptors.…”
