“Pop-slide” patterning: rapid fabrication of microstructured PDMS gasket slides for biological applications

Abstract: We describe a “pop-slide” patterning approach to easily produce thin film microstructures on the surface of glass with varying feature sizes (3 μm – 250 μm) and aspect ratios (0.066 – 3) within 45 minutes. This low cost method does not require specialized equipment while allowing us to produce micro structured gasket layers for sandwich assays and could be readily applied to many biological applications.

“…PDMS has many applications in various fields. It can be used for protective coatings against corrosion, ice-retarding, anti-biofouling and fire retardant, [ 4 ] in micropump and microvalve systems [ 5 , 6 , 7 ], as membranes [ 8 ], as wearable stretchable fabric for sensing and physical protection [ 9 , 10 , 11 ], and for piezoelectric usage [ 12 ]. Nevertheless, PDMS has some drawbacks that limit its application as a structural material.…”

“…This paper describes a novel approach to microfabricate patterns of polysiloxane via direct ink writing (DIW) printing using embedding fluids. Polysiloxane, a class of synthetic compounds comprising repeating siloxane moieties, is an elastic polymer widely used in fluidics, optics, , and biomedical enginnering . Polysiloxane offers desirable properties for microfabrications , due to its castable and curable properties .…”

“…Glass microscope-slides are widely used by biologists in order to observe, analyze, and quantify cellular events and biological samples. Given their uses and its physical properties, microscope slides are used nowadays as base-substrates for the development of microfabrication-based devices such as microfluidics and Lab-on-a-Chip [1]- [4]. The fabrication of those devices requires a previous step of micropatterning.…”
