Population-based demographic study of karyotypes in 1709 patients with adult Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Abstract: Few large demographic studies of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are derived from population-based registries. Demographic and karyotypic data were provided for AML cases from two regional leukemia registry databases in Scotland and the Northern Region of England. A population-based dataset was compiled, comprising 1709 patients aged 416 years (1235 North England/474 Scotland patients). The most common cytogenetic abnormalities involved chromosomes 5 and/or 7 (17%). Patients with the following abnormal chromosome… Show more

“…A successful analysis rate of 83% and a normal karyotype frequency of 45% were comparable to most published series (Sanderson et al, 2006;Cheng et al, 2009), reflecting the high quality of data in the present study. Initially, we determined the frequency and baseline character of MK in Chinese AML patients.…”

“…[18][19][20][21] Abnormalities of 11q23 were observed in 1.2% of cases, similar to earlier studies in which it occurred in no more than 4% of AML patients. [18][19][20][21] The age distribution is different from population to population. The age-specific incidence of AML in our cohort was calculated based on the population of Zhejiang Province in China.…”

“…This frequency was lower than that seen in most western countries (6-13.9%). 6,18,20,21 The partial and/or complete deletion of chromosomes 5 and 7 accounted for 0.8 and 1.4% of our cases. This has been seen in 6-15% of de novo AML in other reports.…”
