Population Genetic Analysis of Haplotypes Based on 17 Short Tandem Repeat Loci on Y Chromosome in Population Sample from Eastern Croatia

Abstract: This is the first description of Y chromosome haplotyping of the population of eastern Croatia, which may serve as a basis for genetic epidemiology and forensic studies. Further studies are needed for characterization of the genetic structure of the Y-chromosome in the modern Croatian population.

“…In the last fifteen years, genetic structure of Y chromosome has been determined in several countries ( 14 - 24 ). A few studies including 7, 9, or 11 Y-STRs were also conducted in Turkey ( 13 , 25 - 27 ).…”

“…The most striking locus in our population data was DYS458, at which a number of intermediate alleles were observed. Intermediate alleles of DYS458 were most frequently found in Northern and the Eastern Africa and the Caucasus ( 24 , 30 , 31 ). They have been reported to be less common in Europe ( 8 ).…”

“…Almost the same most frequent allele distribution was found between central, eastern and southern Croatia across all of the loci analyzed, when compared to northern Croatia, where these differences were more pronounced. [20]. Overall, it is important to share the information about the intermediate alleles in different populations, because their low frequencies are informative in Y-STR databases [24].…”

“…We followed the guidelines on the use of Y-STRs in forensic analysis established by the DNA Commission of the International Society of Forensic Genetics [19]. We published recently a population genetic analysis of haplotypes based on 17 STR loci on Y chromosome in eastern and northern Croatia [20,21]. Thus, we compared our results from the central Croatia with those published for eastern (Virovitičko-podravska, Požeško-slavonska, Brodsko-posavska, Osječko-baranjska, and Vukovarskosrijemska counties) and northern (Krapinsko-zagorska, Varaždinska, Koprivničko-križevačka and Med¯imurje counties) Croatian regions.…”

“…Two of 12 alleles on locus DYS458 were microvariant alleles (17.2 and 18.2). The appearance of variant alleles was expected as it is a specific feature of the locus DYS458 ( 6 ). These alleles are most frequently found in the Northern and the Eastern Africa and the Caucasus but are less common in Europe.…”
