Post-Polio Syndrome

Abstract: Among the late effects of poliomyelitis is the Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS), characterized by increased muscle strength loss, abnormal fatigue and pain after a period of stability of at least 15 years. The incidence and prevalence of PPS are unknown in the world and in Brazil, depending on the diagnostic criteria. The diagnosis of PPS is made by exclusion and there is no specific laboratory test, these only help to rule out other diseases. There is no curative treatment for PPS. Its etiology remains unknown. “…The fatigue can be either central or peripheral being one of the most incapaciting symptoms and the conclusion of our study is to emphasize that patients should be advised about the practice of supervised exercises, changes in the daily living style and energy saving in order to reduce the excess of the metabolic load thus providing improvement in the symptoms and also improving its funcionality (Motta et al 2018(Motta et al , 2019). On the other hand (Vasconcelos Jr., 2006) developed a study using three fatigue scales, showing that Post-polio fatigue is one of the most disabling symptons and that can influence directly in the daily life activities.…”
