Healthcare workers (HCWs) remain on the front line of the battle against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and are among the highest groups at risk of infection during this raging pandemic. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the incidence of postvaccination SARS-CoV-2 infection among vaccinated HCWs. We searched multiple databases from inception through August 2021 to identify studies that reported on the incidence of postvaccination SARS-CoV-2 infection among HCWs. Meta-analysis was performed to determine pooled proportions of COVID-19 infection in partially/fully vaccinated as well as unvaccinated individuals. Eighteen studies with 228 873 HCWs were included in the final analysis. The total number of partially vaccinated, fully vaccinated, and unvaccinated HCWs were 132 922, 155 673, and 17 505, respectively. Overall pooled proportion of COVID-19 infections among partially/ fully vaccinated and unvaccinated HCWs was 2.1% (95% confidence interval [CI]1.2-3.5). Among partially vaccinated, fully vaccinated and unvaccinated HCWs, pooled proportion of COVID-19 infections was 2.3% (CI 1.2-4.4), 1.3% (95% CI 0.6-2.9), and 10.1% (95% CI 4.5-19.5), respectively. Our analysis shows the risk of COVID-19 infection in both partially and fully vaccinated HCWs remains exceedingly low when compared to unvaccinated individuals. There remains an urgent need for all frontline HCWs to be vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Introduction: Many new variants of the coronavirus are infecting the already vaccinated people. There have been reports of deaths also among the already vaccinated subjects. Hence, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the infection breakthrough after COVID vaccination. Materials and Methods: We piloted a review of the healthcare workers who completed the vaccination for COVID. The data were collected from the online resources for the breakthrough infections after vaccination. We then enumerated those subjects who had a breakthrough infection post-vaccination. The data collected were meta-analyzed for the incidence of the infection among the vaccinated individuals. Results: We observed that among nearly 2.3 lakh subjects, less than 3% were infected with the various new strains of the virus. The ratio of the breakthrough infection was different for the vaccinated (1.2%) and the partially vaccinated (3.2%) individuals with greater infection among the partially infected individuals. Discussion: The breakthrough infections are very low among vaccinated individuals and even lower among fully vaccinated individuals. Hence, vaccination is highly recommended to prevent the loss of life.

Background: In December 2019, patients with viral pneumonia-like illnesses were found to be infected with the coronavirus. The spread of COVID-19 infection continues unabated even after vaccination has begun. A study done on health-care workers who were vaccinated reported mild symptomatic breakthrough infection. Studies on breakthrough infections, their severity, and outcome have not been widely done in India. Objectives: This study estimates the COVID-19 test positivity rate among patients reporting to the flu corner of a tertiary care center, their contact history, vaccination status, and the rate of breakthrough infection among the cases. Methodology: A prospective longitudinal study was done on people who presented to the flu corner of McGANN Teaching District Hospital, Shivamogga, in June 2021. Preliminary data were collected through direct interviews. Later positive cases of COVID-19 were followed up till a documented clinical outcome. Responses were made into a database and descriptive statistics were done. Results: The test positivity rate of COVID-19 is 25%. Around 16% of the people who tested positive were asymptomatic. One out of four of the participants was vaccinated with at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Around 15% of the vaccinated people tested positive. Conclusion: Our study found that the test positivity rate at our tertiary hospital is higher than the district average. A single dose of COVID-19 vaccination does not seem to be protective against contracting COVID-19 infections. These findings need to be verified through studies in different settings.
