Power, identity and biodiversity conservation in the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve, Chiapas, Mexico

Abstract: In this article, I analyze how daily conservation discourse and practices create and recreate local identities through the reconfiguration of social relationships brought about by conservation encounters. The mobilization of identity has been a main strategy of the inhabitants of the Lacandon Community Zone and the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve for maintaining their access to natural resources and benefitting from conservation. In the Lacandon Rainforest, conservation comes at great cost to the local populat… Show more

“…Local communities’ ability to relate to nature in a way that is congruent with their value‐systems depends on their recognition in collective decision‐making. At the local level, conservation decisions are affected by a range of interacting factors including power relations (Durand, 2019; Pinkerton, 2019) and cultural norms (Peterson et al, 2010; Roncoli et al., 2011; Teitelbaum et al., 2019). Decision‐making processes about conservation are also embedded in a given symbolic context (Taddei, 2011) and epistemology (Vermeylen, 2019).…”

“…For instance, Nancy Lee Peluso and Peter Vandergeest (2001), among others, have pointed out how governments and other entities have deployed processes of conservation, ecological characterization and management of protected areas to determine which residents of a given territory 'belong' there and which must be removed or barred, for the sake of a given ecosystem. Certain groups, such as indigenous peoples, may be seen as guardians of supposedly pristine ecosystems, or even as part of them; while others may be seen as invaders or opportunists (Durand 2019). Thus, the work of peoples who helped create and maintain habitats (e.g.…”
