Imported high-fired ceramics (tradewares) are critical for dating early South Sulawesi historical sites between the 13th/14th and 16th/17th centuries AD. The Allangkanangnge ri Latanete site is of great importance in the South Sulawesi context because of its large tradeware assemblage of more than 2000 sherds and its radiometric chronology that confirms the 13th/14th-16th/17thcentury dating assigned by ceramic specialists to the tradeware classes. The site is also of major importance in its local identification with the palace centre of Cina, an early Bugis kingdom. The combined chronological evidence from tradewares and chronometric determinations demonstrates a 14th-century antiquity for the deepest examples of the abundant rice phytoliths recovered from the site. Allangkanangnge ri Latanete exemplifies the major role of rice in the economy of the early Bugis agrarian kingdoms as their subsistence basis and as a source of surplus produce to trade for ceramics and other exotic imports.

Wajo in South Sulawesi is a region that has been known have findings from Keywords: megalithic site hierarchy, settlements AbstrakKabupaten Wajo di Sulawesi Selatan merupakan daerah yang selama ini diketahui memiliki temuan-temuan masa Islam, sehingga cenderung dikategorikan sebagai daerah yang memulai peradabannya sekitar abad ke-17 Masehi. Penelitian di Wajo dimaksudkan untuk memperoleh gambaran mengenai distribusi dan masa perkembangan megalitik, dan juga dapat menandai awal peradabannya. Dalam pencapaiannya, digunakan metode survei untuk mengetahui distribusi megalitik secara sinkronis dan dilakukan ekskavasi di situs Cilellang untuk mengetahui variabilitas temuan dalam lapisan budaya dan masa perkembangan megalitik secara diakronis. Dari penelitian diperoleh gambaran bahwa situs Cilellang, Tobattang dan Allangkanange merupakan situs megalitik yang berkembang sejak abad ke-13 hingga abad ke-15 M di wilayah sebelah tenggara Danau Tempe. Aktivitas pertanian merupakan mata pencaharian pokok ditandai dengan temuan 36 lumpang batu pada ketiga situs tersebut. Ketiga situs juga dapat memberi gambaran secara hirarki, yaitu situs Allangkanange mungkin mempunyai strata sosial permukiman yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan situs Cilellang dan Tobattang, karena memiliki luas situs paling besar, tinggalan arkeologi yang lebih bervariatif dan lokasi yang lebih tinggi. Mungkin saja situs Allangkanange adalah pusat pemerintahan dari situs Cilellang dan Tobattang.

This paper reviews the use of archaeological and documentary sources in the understanding of the past in Island Southeast Asia. The relationship between these two sources of data (and data sources that cross the boundaries of these categories) has varied over time, depending on the availability of data, changing interpretive strategies and scholarly trends and in uences. The wealth of documentary sources relevant to Island Southeast AsiaÕs past, and the increasing availability of detailed archaeological data have increased the potential to understand the past in this region from a variety of points of view. While this potential has not yet been fully realized, in part due to an unsophisticated use of these separate lines of evidence, recent scholarship has pushed the boundaries and revealed new information and insights into this history.Cet article passe en revue lÕutilisation de sources documentaires et arch ologiques dans la connaissance du pass des "les du Sud-Est asiatique.
