PPARG Polymorphisms Are Associated with Unexplained Mild Vision Loss in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: Objectives. To investigate whether the presence of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG) gene polymorphisms is associated with unexplained mild visual impairment (UMVI) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods. A total of 135 T2DM residents with UMVI and 133 with normal vision (NV; best-corrected visual acuity ≥ 20/25 in both eyes) were enrolled. UMVI was defined as best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) < 20/25 and ≥ 20/63 in both eyes, with no visual impairment-causing diseas… Show more

“…The PPARG variant, rs1801282, is important in the development of obesity as well as adipose and muscle tissue metabolism [ 33 ]. This variant has recently been investigated in the development of early visual impairment in T2DM Chinese Han population [ 33 ] and been associated with obstructive sleep apnea in Chinese Han and Indian subjects diagnosed with T2DM [ 34 , 35 ]. Obesity is a known comorbid disease of diabetes and sleep apnea has also been associated with diabetes, therefore, this variant was included for investigation.…”

“…The World Health Organization uses a threshold of 20/60 for visual impairment, while 20/40 is used as the standard of visual impairment for research purposes [ 32 34 ]. VA ≤ 20/25 (loss of 1 line) indicates mild poor vision, which means the individual may have mild difficulty in daily life without spectacles [ 35 , 36 ].…”
