Prective value of preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in detecting bowel resection in hernia with intestinal incarceration

Abstract: High NLR rates, certainly with clinical correlation, can be used as a biomarker to predict intestinal necrosis and the need for intestinal resection in patients who will undergo surgery for incarcerated hernia, particularlyin situations with lacking radiological imaging methods.

“…In our study, duration of symptoms were correlated with lactate, NLR and LPR levels. Lactate levels, NLR and PLR were higher in patients requiring a bowel resection due to non-viable bowel compared to the no-bowel resection group similar to the findings of Köksal et al [11].…”

“…Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and plateletlymphocyte ratio (PLR) can be a good predictor of the severity of inflammatory response [10][11][12][13]. High NLR and PLR levels can be used as a marker to estimate intestinal necrosis and the need for intestinal resection in patients who will undergo surgery for OH [11,12].…”

“…In ammation indicators such as the WBC count, percentage of neutrophils, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were increased when incarcerated hernia evolved into a strangulated hernia [16][17][18]. These elevated in ammatory markers suggest a high risk of bowel necrosis, so emergency surgery should be performed immediately.…”

“…New evidence suggests that platelet indices may have diagnostic and prognostic value in some diseases. They allow extensive clinical trials that focus on diagnosis and prognostic values in a variety of settings without extra cost 6,9,13,15 . Measuring all of the platelet indices at the same time can provide a valid tool for measuring the severity of the disease and an idea of the potential etiology that causes a change in platelet indices.…”
