Pregnancy Complicated by Acute Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Abstract: AND SummaryTwo patients are described who had acute severe idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) presenting in late pregnancy. In both there was little or no response to corticosteroid therapy and elective Caesarean section and splenectomy were performed. The babies had marked thrombocytopenia which disappeared spontaneously. It is suggested that in acute ITP Caesarean section is indicated on paediatric grounds and poses no untoward maternal risk when combined with splenectorny and platelet transfusion.
