Preliminary study of an ancient earthquake-proof construction technique monitoring by an innovative structural health monitoring system

Abstract: <p class="Abstract">The historical and cultural heritage analysis of the Italian territory is of primary importance, because this territory is one of the richest in the world and can enrich our knowledge in different field. In fact, in the field of structural engineering, a new discovery was made in Calabria, in the south of Italy. By investigating various architectural treatises related to earthquake-proof constructions, new knowledge was ganed by analyzing buildings made with fictile tubules bricks. On… Show more

“…Sensors play a pivotal role in this field [5], especially if they have Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities that endorse data sharing, cloud services for computation (also with Artificial Intelligence -AI -technologies), and remote monitoring systems [6]. The best solution is probably represented by distributed sensor networks, able to gather data in many locations within the same structure, thus mapping the whole system and highlighting eventual criticalities in almost real-time [7]. Moreover, the collected data are exploited to constitute a dedicated database, which can be used to feed AI and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms for both prediction and classification purposes [8]- [10].…”

“…This class of damage is characterized by a depth that is lower, than a structural crack. Instead, structural cracks can arise due to design deficiency, construction deficiency, settlement of foundation [7], [8] reinforcement corrosion, and the effect of temperature variation, overloading, and swelling of soil below the foundation of the structure [9], [10].…”
