Preparation and characterization of natural rubber foams: Effects of foaming temperature and carbon black content

Abstract: The influence of the foaming temperature and carbon black content on the cure behavior and mechanical properties of natural rubber foams was investigated at five temperature zones by 5 o C interval and different feeding ratios of the carbon black. The physical properties of the foamed NRs were then measured as a function of the foaming temperature and carbon black content, respectively. The optimal temperature for vulcanization and foaming of NRs in this study was considered to be 165 o C where density of the … Show more

“…Natural rubber foam (NRF) is the cross‐linked rubber specimen containing air bubbles inside the rubber matrix. It has been extensively used in automotive application due to its light weight and insulation properties . NRF can be produced by several techniques such as mechanical whipping of gas, addition of gas‐filled beads, and thermal decomposition of chemical blowing agent.…”

“…Alumina is an inorganic and ceramic substance which can enhance mechanical property, thermal conductivity, thermal stability, flame resistance, and cost effectiveness. It is widely applied in a large number of applications: high temperature protective coatings, microelectronic packaging, infrared transmitting materials, microwave dielectrics, catalysts, and automotive devices due to its low thermal expansion coefficient, good thermal and chemical stability, high creep resistance, good thermal shock resistance, high melting point, and superior toughness and strength (Lee and Choi, 2007;Kansal and Laine, 1997;Rozenberg and Tenne, 2008;Ansarifar, 2006).…”

“…Figure elucidates the effect of carbon black on the maximum and minimum viscosity variations and torque values of the sponge EPDM composite. Generally, with increasing viscosity of the material, the torque values during the vulcanization also progressed synchronously . The first observation over the presented figure was that in both phases, the torque values increased relative to the filler incorporation increase.…”
