Pretilt Angles of Liquid Crystal on Organic-Solvent-Soluble Polyimide Alignment Films

Abstract: The increase of pretilt angle of liquid crystal in an active matrix (AM) liquid crystal display (LCD) is one of the most important issues to achieve high-contrast and defect-free AM LCDs. We have developed a new generation method of the pretilt angle by using newly synthesized organic-solvent-soluble polyimides containing two types of diamine. The maximum pretilt angle of 2.8° for a nematic liquid crystal is obtained using new polyimides.

“…VHRs of LC cells using rubbed PI shows the lowest value probably due to the surface contamination by impurities from rubbing cloth. VHRs of LC cells using UV exposed PI in nitrogen show higher VHR than that of UV exposed PI in air, which is the same as those using conventional PI materials for active matrix use [15].…”

“…Thus far, many studies on the pretilt angle have been reported. [56][57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67] Pretilt angle generation in a rubbed polyimide alignment film is thought to be influenced by the inclined refractive index ellipsoid of the stretched surface layer and the conformation of polyimide molecules, 68,69 but there is no clear boundary between LC and alignment film, and LC molecules invade the surface layer of the alignment film. The pretilt angle is also influenced by the structure of the LC molecules.…”

“…31 High imidization ratios are required to obtain stable polyimides with excellent performance. 43 Imidization ratios of polyimides are generally measured by IR measurement and comparing absorption intensities of amic acid carbonyl groups with those of imide carbonyl groups. 44 In the case of soluble polyimides, NMR measurement is convenient because solution samples can be prepared that give more quantitative imidization ratio data.…”
