Prevalence of Human Papillomavirus Infection and Associated Risk Factors in Young Women in Brazil, Canada, and the United States

Abstract: To determine the prevalence of cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and risk factors in young women from Brazil, Canada, and the USA. Cross-sectional study in 3204 healthy women, aged 15 to 25 years. Cervical samples were collected for cytology and for HPV DNA detection (SPF 10-LiPA 25 system). Serum samples were collected for the measurement of HPV-16 and HPV-18 antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Risk factors were obtained through a questionnaire. Overall, 26.6% of women had DNA detecte… Show more

“…In a previous study with 1,509 Brazilian healthy young women without cervical lesions of five different centres, aged 15 to 25 years, we found an overall prevalence of HPV of 29.7%. The most prevalent HPV type was HPV16, followed by HPV51, 52, 31 and 68 [19]. Among 8,656 healthy Danish women aged 20 to 29 years, the prevalence of HPV types in decreasing rank was HPV16 followed by HPV31, 52, 51, 33, 39, 45 and 56 [10].…”

“…A limitation of this study is that no additional information from the South African women is known about their sexual behavior, and therefore we were unable to explore associations between behaviors and HPV genotype. Roteli-Martins et al found that young age at first sexual intercourse and increasing number of sexual partners is the main determinant for hr-HPV 16/18 infections [17]. …”

“…A meta-analysis has revealed that HPV 16 is the most common genotype found among women presenting with normal cervical cytology worldwide (de Sanjosé et al, 2007). Furthermore, a multicenter analysis of young women presenting with normal cervical cytology from Brazil, Canada, and the USA also determined HPV 16 to be the most prevalent genotype (Roteli-Martins et al, 2011). In Brazil, this type was also found to be the most prevalent, ranging from 18.6 to 52.2% within the women population in different cities (Rosa et al, 2008;Oliveira et al, 2010;Castro et al, 2011;Baldez da Silva et al, 2012).…”
