“…Plummer (1962) also found high neutralization titres against ERAV in the sera of 3/12 stable workers, whilst no ERAV antibodies could be detected in a control group of 159 non-stable workers. Kriegshauser et al (2005) found only a low prevalence (2.7 %) of weakly neutralizing antibodies to ERAV in human sera obtained from 137 mixed-practice veterinarians, whilst 90 % of 200 horses sampled were positive, many with high titres. A previous serological survey carried out on 439 equine sera from the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates in 1998 showed that more than 50 % of the horses tested had antibodies to ERAV (Wernery et al, 1999).…”

“…The purification protocol reported in this study provides enough antigen to coat approximately 1000 ELISA 96-well plates. Therefore, diagnostic approaches based on rVP1 appear to be cost-effective alternatives to methods currently used in the serodiagnosis of ERBV1 such as VN or RT-PCR (McCollum and Timoney, 1992;Kriegshäuser et al, 2005;Black et al, 2007). Although serological data presented in this study are limited to 6 horse serum samples only, our results suggest that denatured rVP1 is a promising candidate for the development of an ELISA to be used in the routine laboratory diagnosis of ERBV1 infection in horses.…”

“…Studies on the seroprevalence of ERBV1 have shown that the virus is widespread in European horse populations (Holmes et al, 1978;Steck et al, 1978;De Boer et al, 1979;Kriegshäuser et al, 2005). Traditionally, virus neutralisation (VN) has been the method of choice for the serodiagnosis of ERBV1 infection.…”

“…Auch hier wäre eine Impfindikation denkbar. Anhaltspunkte für das Antigen, gegen das protektive, die Virusanheftung an permissive Zellen verhindernde Antikörper bei ERAV gebildet werden, liefern die Untersuchungen von Warner et al (2001) und Kriegshäuser et al (2005). Demzufolge ist dasVirusprotein1 (VP1) von ERAV -vergleichbar dem VP1 des MKS-Virus -für die Virusanheftung hauptverantwortlich.…”
