The malignant hyperthermic syndrome occurs in man and the pig, usually following administration of the anaesthetic halothane or the myorelaxant succinylcholine.Mechanisms in skeletal muscle and in the central nervous system appear to be involved in its development. The primary intracellular event may be a loss of energy phosphates from muscle and other tissues while manifestations of sympathetic activation such as tachycardia and hyperthermia develop subsequently. Myore!axants, adrenergie blocking agents and neuroleptic drugs have been reported to prevent the onset of acute malignant hyperthermia in susceptible animals.

“…Dantrolene has been shown to be of prophylactic and therapeutic benefit in the ~{ syndrome of swine and humans when administered sufficiently early and in appropriate dosages (Kerr et al, 1978). Similarly, Dantrolene administered to horses at dosages comparable to the prophylactic regime for pigs supplied considerable relief from clinical signs of spasm and pain in cases where other muscle relaxants were of little use and without producing untoward central effects.…”

Waldron-Mease, E., 1979. Post anesthetic myositis in the horse associated with in vitro malignant hyperthermia susceptibility. Vet. Sci. Commun., 3:45-50.Four horses ~ith clinical and biochemical evidence of post-operative myositls following halothane anesthesia and characterized by well localized (lumbar) to generalized rigidity and pain are described. Response to Dantrolene Sodium therapy at 4 mg/kg per os was dependent upon rapidity of administration following onset. In vitro exposure of muscle to halothane and caffeine revealed increased sensitivity when compared to control horses.
