Primary Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma of the Oral Cavity: Germinal Center Classification

Abstract: Primary lymphomas of the oral cavity are rare and the most frequent type is diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Recently, several reports have highlighted the value of classifying DLBCL into prognostically important subgroups, namely germinal center B-cell like (GCB) and non-germinal center B-cell like (non-GCB) lymphomas based on gene expression profiles and by immunohistochemical expression of CD10, BCL6 and MUM-1. GCB lymphomas tend to exhibit a better prognosis than non-GCB lymphomas. Studies validating… Show more

“…In accordance with reports in the literature, our patient was a male aged 60 years. DLBCL of the head and neck may be associated with undiagnosed HIV, since they account for 2% of oral neoplasms in AIDS patients 6. The common presenting symptoms of oral NHL include a non-tender swelling which grows rapidly, and may ulcerate and enlarge to become a necrotic and foul smelling lesion 3 6.…”

“…Many studies have shown that primary oral lymphomas present with a soft to firm soft tissue mass which is usually non-tender and may or may not be ulcerated. This lesion can mimic periodontal or apical abscesses [8] [9]. Bony lesions, however, often present with low grade pain which can mimic a toothache making the diagnosis difficult.…”

“…27 It has also been reported that multiple myeloma oncogene 1 (MUM1) expression is significantly associated to a lower survival rate. 28 The study by Bhattacharyya et al 29 considered the type of DLBCL in the oral cavity as a prognostic factor. Similarly, Tibiletti et al 30 evaluated fluorescence in situ hybridization to detect the heterogeneity of DLBCL and identify alterations with prognostic implications.…”
