Profile and Reference Values for Body Fat and Skeletal Muscle Mass Percent at Females, Aged from 18.0 to 69.9, Measured by Multichannel Segmental Bioimpedance Method: Serbian Population Study

Abstract: Profile and standards for the diagnostics of percent of body fat and muscles were defined on a sample of 1924 women from the Republic of Serbia, aged 18.0 to 69.9, where the body structure of subjects was measured by applying multichannel segmental bioimpedance. Total sample was divided into six age groups, for the purpose of the definition of standard with regards to age. When it comes to body fat percentage results have shown that the average value of the total sample was 28.51±9.26 %, and between the range … Show more

“…Body composition measurement procedures were conducted using a multi-channel bioelectric impedance analyzer (InBody 720: Biospace Co. Ltd, Seoul, Korea), which was shown to be very reliable with an ICC = 0.97 (Aandstad et al, 2014). The assessment was conducted as previously reported in detail (Dopsaj et al, 2017;Rakic et al, 2019). All body composition measurements were conducted between 08:00-10:00 am, whereby all participants fasted the night before the measurements being taken, and were advised not to eat a large meal for dinner, and not to exercise the day prior to the measurement.…”

“…According to the actual standards, air-displacement plethysmography (Bod Pod) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) were accepted as reference methods (gold standard) for the validity of body composition assessment and analysis [ 12 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. In that regard, multi frequency bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) method for assessment of body composition was found to be valid and reliable, and thus became widely used in clinics, public health, occupational health, and sports medicine [ 8 , 10 , 12 , 20 , 21 ]. Moreover it is considered a portable alternative to DEXA [ 14 ].…”

“…Moreover it is considered a portable alternative to DEXA [ 14 ]. Therefore, the results obtained from age-related studies could be used for the development of fundamental values that serve as the basis for defining evidence-based scientific knowledge related to biological, physiological, functional and physical changes in the health of humans during aging and lifespan [ 2 , 4 , 6 , 21 , 22 ]. In addition, results from the studies on growth and ageing could be cross-validated between the cultures and socio-economic statuses, whereby reference values could be calculated with well-defined precision and error of measurement.…”

“…It is also obvious that the different conditions of life in the population of women older than 13 years or even more, and subjects from the actual study, resulted in a potentiated change in the body composition with a significant increase in the percentage of body fat, while at the same time there is a reduction of three biologically relevant tissues, i.e. minerals, water, and protein [4,19].…”

“…of endogenous and exogenous factors. But, it is a fact that a system of longitudinal monitoring of the state of the body composition has to exist, whether due to the purpose of continuously tracking a person's development, or as some internal, external, or even global system, used for monitoring growth and development of the general population during growing and aging [19,21]. Also, a scientific system based on standards of body composition is very important for planning measures and me-Физиология thods for corrections, as well as changes in physical activity or changes in the strategy of eating habits [2,11,23].…”
