Progesterone and estrogen influence postexercise leukocyte infiltration in overiectomized female rats

Abstract: Limited research has been conducted on the effects of progesterone alone, or in combination with estrogen, on leukocyte infiltration in skeletal muscle following exercise. To investigate the effects of these female sex hormones, ovariectomized female rats were divided into 4 exercise and 4 control groups: sham, estrogen, progesterone, and a combination of estrogen plus progesterone. Following 8 days of hormone replacement and 24 h postexercise, soleus (red) and superficial (white) vastus muscles were removed a… Show more

“…Estrogen is an antioxidant and membrane stabilizer and as such it has the potential to protect muscle membranes from exercise induced muscle damage and to attenuate inflammatory responses [6,29]. Estrogen has been repeatedly been found to diminish postexercise inflammation and infiltration of muscle by leukocytes such as neutrophils and macrophages [30][31][32].…”

“…Various factors could potentially modulate the EIMD response in females, including oral 60 contraceptive use, and the potential protective effect of oestrogen (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13). There is some 61 evidence suggesting that females are less fatigable than males (14) and the subsequent 62 recovery following damaging exercise is known to be quicker (15).…”

“…E2 eliminated the elevated skeletal muscle neutrophil abundance that occurred following a single bout of eccentric exercise, an observation supported by animal studies that report either partial (60%) (73) or complete attenuation (37,70) of neutrophil accumulation with E2 in the 24 h after exercise. When a comparison was made between men and women following a single bout of eccentric exercise, both sexes showed increases in the number of cells containing leukocyte common antigen; however, there was a very strong trend (P ϭ 0.052) for less infiltration in women than men (0.74 Ϯ 0.59 cells/mm 2 vs. 2.70 Ϯ 2.18 cells/mm 2 ) (62).…”
