Propolis in Livestock Nutrition

Abstract: Our article provides the first demonstration about two theories concerning how it is produced. In his theory, Küstenmacher showed that in the summer, when plants profusely secrete oily balsamic substances on the surface of pollen, bees regurgitate them onto the comb and the walls of the hive, thereby producing propolis. Rosch showed that in late summer and autumn, bees collect resinous plant-derived substances and process them into propolis. As a substance of plant origin, propolis has a variable composition, … Show more

“…However, in the face of oxidative stress reactive oxygen species, including hydrogen peroxide, disrupted copper binding to ceruloplasmin causes a release of the ion responsible for the promotion of oxidative pathology [ 55 ]. Therefore, in the course of wound healing particular importance seems to be gained by, the activity of propolis reported to increase the activity of the ceruloplasmin [ 56 , 57 ]. The last observation seems to confirm the results of the present study experiment, in the course of which, after a previous fall recorded on the 10th day, along with the 21st day of experience, propolis dressing stimulates the increase in ceruloplasmin amplitude, which reaches the values observed at the beginning of the experiment.…”

“…Propolis has been shown to treat numerous diseases, in human and veterinary medicine, and has had positive effects on animal health (Kadhim et al, 2018). Because of the high occurrence of gastrointestinal disorders and their effect on calf morbidity and mortality, dairy systems have increased the inclusion of additives that have a positive effect on the control of diarrhea.…”

“…Bees are extraordinary insects (Tautz 2008), as they can purify nectar (especially that of goldenrod and sunflower) by removal of balsamic substances, which are regurgitated from the crop and used for the production of propolis (Kadhim et al 2018). In this manner, some amounts of metals present in nectar can be excreted with balms and deposited in propolis (Conti and Botrè 2001) due to the antagonistic effect of Zn Pb and Cd (Puzanowska-Tarasiewicz et al 2009;Wołonciej et al 2016).…”
