Prospective Analysis of Lipid Variations in Hyperthyroid Subjects from Lahore, Pakistan

Abstract: Perturbations in the actions of T3 and T4 influence the normal metabolic pathways. Responsiveness of lipid biomarkers like LDL-C, HDL-C, TC, TG, Apo-A, and Apo-B after rehabilitation of thyroid profile attaining euthyroid state was determined. A total of 179 age-matched subjects of both genders were recruited for this research. Sixty healthy controls, thirty-four subclinical, fifty overt hyperthyroid, and thirty-five follow-up subjects having 3 months of Carbimazole therapy were enrolled. Biochemical analysis … Show more

“…From Tables 1 and 2, there was not any significant change in lipid profile parameters and systolic and diastolic blood pressure in both subclinical hyperthyroidism and control groups. Our results are in agreement with those of Heemstra et al, Iqbal et al, Maratou et al (Heemstra et al, 2006;Iqbal et al, 2021;Maratou et al, 2010). Thyroid hormones participate in lipid biosynthesis and degradation.…”

“…Thyroid hormones participate in lipid biosynthesis and degradation. But the degradation process exceeds the biosynthesis this is why serum total cholesterol and triglyceride decreased insignificantly in the subclinical hyperthyroid group (Iqbal et al, 2021). As expected, there is a state of hypermetabolism in patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism similar to those with overt hyperthyroidism (Soni and Kaushik, 2014).…”

“…Previous research has shown that low TSH levels do cause an increase in TG and LDL cholesterol levels and a decrease in HDL cholesterol levels, [ 14 ] and that elevated FT4 levels do indeed increase TG and decrease HDL cholesterol levels in patients with hyperthyroidism [ 15 ]. These findings may be explained by the fact that FT4 increases intestinal glucose absorption, decreases insulin secretion, increases liver glucose production, and increases catecholamines, leading to insulin resistance [ 16 , 17 , 18 ].…”
