Protective care‐receiving: the active role of care‐recipients

Abstract: Historical and contemporary conceptualizations of caregiving have not addressed the active role of care recipients within caregiver-care-recipient relationships. Using an interpretive synthesis method, the authors developed the concept of protective care-receiving from three qualitative studies of different groups of care receivers (older adults with chronic illnesses, persons with AIDS, and persons in treatment for active cancer). This paper describes the focus of care recipients' protective care-receiving ef… Show more

“…The dynamics of intergenerational old-age care have been explored from a number of disciplinary perspectives within geographically proximate families (Bengtson and Roberts 1991;Bowers 1987;Hjälm 2012;Russell, Bunting, and Gregory 1997), but seldom across national borders.…”

“…Families separated by migration may have asymmetries (Carling 2008;Dreby and Adkins 2010), but that is not to say that migrants singlehandedly provide care to their parents in the country of origin. Expressing needs and desires is an active way of care receiving (Russell, Bunting, and Gregory 1997), and migrants' ascendants, like geographically proximate parents and grandparents, are also caregivers. Therefore, through a qualitative study of BelgianMoroccan intergenerational caregiving, we take a two-pronged approach to the study of the zero generation: (1) emphasising the agency of older parents as care recipients, and (2) equally highlighting their roles as transnational caregivers.…”

“…The root cause of this situation is presumed to be that the elderly person does not tell the family about himself or herself. It is said that the elderly receiving care do not stress the things that will make them happy, but rather they act to make the family caregiver happy so that he or she will continue providing care (Russell, Bunting & Gregory, 1997). Also in Japan, research reports indicate that old people in the later stages of life who are living with their family try to maintain their relationships with the family in ways such as being together with the family, trying not to be disliked by the family, and adapting themselves to the care provided by the family caregiver (Nagahata, 1996).…”

“…Interpretative approaches in combination with references to various metasynthesis methods are applied referring to Gadamer (Kärkkäinen, Bondas & Eriksson, 2005) and Ricoeur (Råholm, Lindholm & Eriksson, 2002). Content analysis (McNaughton, 2000) and concept synthesis (Russell, Bunting & Gregory, 1997;Finfgeld-Connett, 2005) are seen in connection with metasynthesis. Reviews including quantitative studies also were called meta-synthesis (Lefler & Bondy, 2004).…”

“…Some samples seem to be convenience samples with little information on its type; however, most studies had information on the sample size. Some studies with small samples (Russell et al, 1997;Kennedy et al, 2003;Kylmä, 2005;Kylmä, 2006) used their own research in spite that a data base search was described that did not reveal any other comparable studies (Kylmä, 2005;. Kearney (2001b) argues that the greater the number of substantive studies to work with, the higher the level of formal theory that can be achieved and the more saturated and transferable will be the product of analysis.…”
