Protective effect of sulfated polysaccharides from a Celluclast-assisted extract of Hizikia fusiforme against ultraviolet B-induced photoaging in vitro in human keratinocytes and in vivo in zebrafish

Abstract: Our previous study evaluated the in vitro and in vivo antioxidant activities of sulfated polysaccharides from a Celluclastassisted extract of Hizikia fusiforme (HFPS). The results indicate that HFPS possesses potent antioxidant activity and suggest the potential use of HFPS to combat photoaging. In this study, we investigated the ultraviolet (UV) protective effect of HFPS in vitro in keratinocytes (HaCaT cells) and in vivo in zebrafish. The results indicate that HFPS significantly reduced the level of intracel… Show more

“…UVB, a subtype of UV, is thought to cause more stress to the skin than other subtypes of UV. Previous reports suggested that UVB causes both epidermic and dermic damage by stimulating intracellular ROS generation [15,28]. The above data indicated that EMC possesses potent ROS scavenging effect and suggests the photoprotective potential of EMC.…”

“…and found the carrageenan effectively reduced the intracellular ROS level in UVB-irradiated HaCaT cells and increased the viability of the cells [ 36 ]. In our previous study, we investigated the UVB protective effect of the crude sulfated polysaccharides isolated from H. fusiforme (HFPS) and found that HFPS effectively protected HaCaT cells against UVB-induced photoaging [ 39 ]. However, the photoprotective effect of the purified fucoidan and its potential mechanism of action have not been investigated so far.…”

“…Marine algae are rich in compounds that possess various bioactivities including UV protection. In our ninth paper, Wang et al (2019) evaluate the antioxidant activities and UV-protective effect of sulfated polysaccharides, derived from the celluclast-assisted extract of a brown alga Hizikia fusiforme. They indicate that these polysaccharides significantly reduce UVB-induced photo-damage in in vitro and in vivo models and can be used as a potential natural cosmeceutical ingredient.…”
