PSON: A Serialization Format for IoT Sensor Networks

Abstract: In many Internet of Things (IoT) environments, the lifetime of a sensor is linked to its power supply. Sensor devices capture external information and transmit it. They also receive messages with control commands, which means that one of the largest computational overheads of sensor devices is spent on data serialization and deserialization tasks, as well as data transmission. The simpler the serialization/deserialization and the smaller the size of the information to be transmitted, the longer the lifetime of… Show more

“…Later, we will examine Concise Data Definition Language (CDDL) [21]; this language has different roles as it serves as an extension to CBOR and define different data structures. Finally, we present a literature review of different binary formats commonly used for data representation on the internet [22][23][24][25][26][27].…”

“…These objectives may not have been explicitly stated, but can be inferred from the context in which the format was first utilized. Examples of alternative binary formats with similar objectives include Protocol Buffers, designed by Google, PSON, Smile, and Message Services Data Transmission (MSDTP) [26,27].…”

“…Moreover, in many application environments of the Internet of Things (IoT), the sensor’s lifetime is critical. One important factor is its power supply [ 1 ]. The available resources are limited in the device, and achieving lower power consumption on the device is also important [ 2 ].…”
