Q-switched erbium-doped fibre laser based on molybdenum disulfide and tungsten disulfide as saturable absorbers

Abstract: Abstract.A passively Q-switched erbium-doped fibre laser is experimentally implemented, using molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) and tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) as saturable absorbers. The results testify that a WS 2 -based Q-switched fibre laser generates more stable pulse trains, if compared with the MoS 2 -based saturable absorber. The wavelength region where the Q-switched pulses have been obtained is a so-called C-band region. The central wavelengths are 1559 and 1560 nm for MoS 2 and WS 2 , respectively.

“…In this letter, we demonstrate a Q-switched EDFL using WS 2 based SA, which was prepared using a drop casting method. Compared to the previously reported, this paper has successfully demonstrated a higher repetition rate and short pulse width size [15]. Moreover, the proposed laser produced a higher maximum pulse energy of 123nJ.…”

“…TMDs also have a relatively unique feature, that is, the exciton effect, coupled with the Pauli blocking effect and subband gap energy photon saturation absorption, so as to achieve Q-switching in the laser, resulting in a short pulse high energy laser output. For example, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), tungsten disulfide (WS2), titanium disulfide (TiS2), molybdenum selenide (MoSe2), and tungsten selenide (WSe2) have been introduced as SA in Q-switched and mode-locked fiber lasers [16][17][18][19][20]. Manganese sulfide (MnS) material is also a substance in TMD.…”
