QTL analysis of production and taste characteristics of Chicory (Cichorium intybus var. foliosum)

Abstract: Productivity is the main objective in chicory breeding, in addition to uniformity and reproducibility. The genetic bases of chicory (Cichorium intybus L. var. foliosum Hegi) production characteristics have been investigated in this paper. Characteristics were measured on F3 populations and quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were mapped on to the genetic linkage map of chicory. A large part of the total variation was explained by the QTLs detected in the first forcing period. In the winter and late forcing period, … Show more

“…Nevertheless, most scientific literature refers to Witloof chicory as a type belonging to var. foliosum [2,10,[18][19][20][21][22][23]. The cultivar groups Pain de Sucre, Radicchio, and Catalogne are assigned to var.…”

“…4). However, it must be noted, that chicory is rarely breeding crop (Baert and van Bockstaele, 1992) and the selection of varieties for improving the HI is a challenge to optimalize the production performance (van Stallen et al, 2005).…”

“…Our results showed that application of BAS (and mainly of Atonik) in all the varieties and experimental years significantly increased the growthproduction performance of chicory and yield and quality of root. The second way of optimization the production of chicory is targeted breeding of varieties with high production potential and theirs ecological plasticity (Spranger et al, 1997;van Stallen et al, 2005 …”
