Quadrant Distribution of Tropical Cyclone Inner-Core Kinematics in Relation to Environmental Shear

Abstract: Airborne Doppler radar data collected in tropical cyclones by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration WP-3D aircraft over an 8-yr period (2003-10) are used to statistically analyze the vertical structure of tropical cyclone eyewalls with reference to the deep-layer shear. Convective evolution within the inner core conforms to patterns shown by previous studies: convection initiates downshear right, intensifies downshear left, and weakens upshear. Analysis of the vertical distribution of radar reflectiv… Show more

“…The downdrafts flank the eyewall, with the inner downdraft at lower levels mostly driven by the evaporative cooling and the outer downdraft in the upper troposphere being the result of the storm-relative inflow in the upshear. These shear-relative patterns of updrafts and downdrafts around the eyewall are consistent with previous observations (Black et al 2002;Reasor et al 2013;DeHart et al 2014).…”

“…Enhanced lower-to midtropospheric downdrafts are found on the upshear-left quadrant of the eyewall and ascend around the upshearright quadrant through the upper troposphere. This pronounced convective asymmetry has also been confirmed by other observational studies that used composite radar data DeHart et al 2014), lightning observations Molinari 2002, 2003), and satellite-derived precipitation data Cecil 2007;Hence and Houze 2011).…”

“…In the presence of VWS, upward motions are induced outside the eyewall from downshear right to downshear left (Figs. 12c,d), which is consistent with observations (Corbosiero and Molinari 2003;Zhang et al 2013;DeHart et al 2014). The positive entropy upflux indicates that these updrafts outside the eyewall are capable of transporting the higher-entropy air upward from the BL, resulting in an increase in moist entropy above the BL.…”

“…Despite the strong downdraft at downshear-left, balanced dynamics suggests that the VWS could initiate convection from the downshearright quadrant outside the eyewall (Jones 1995). While observational studies (Corbosiero and Molinari 2003;Reasor et al 2009;Reasor and Eastin 2012;Reasor et al 2013;Zhang et al 2013;DeHart et al 2014) have also confirmed the presence of shear-induced convective asymmetries in the inner core, the roles of the downshear-right updrafts outside the eyewall on entropy evolution, and their impact on TC intensity, have yet to be studied and require further investigation.…”
