Quality of Life and Symptom Management in Advanced Biliary Tract Cancers

Abstract: Biliary tract carcinomas (BTCs) account for less than 1% of all cancers but are increasing in incidence. Prognosis is poor for BTC patients, with 5-year survival rates of less than 10%. While chemotherapy has been the mainstay treatment for patients with advanced BTC, immunotherapy and targeted therapies are being evaluated in numerous clinical trials and rapidly incorporated into clinical practice. As patients with BTC have reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL) due to both tumor- and treatment-relate… Show more

“…Well-known prognostic factors of BTC are tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) classification along with the anatomical location of the cancer [ 1 , 7 , 27 ]. The non-invasive approach detecting meth-HOXA9 in blood may contribute with prognostic value and to our knowledge; the issue has not previously (even preclinical) been investigated in relation to late stage BTC.…”

“…Biliary tract cancer (BTC) is comprised of cholangiocarcinoma (cancers located in intrahepatic, perihepatic, and distal bile duct), gallbladder carcinoma, and ampulla of Vater carcinoma. BTC accounts for <1% of all tumors, with a deplorable 5-year survival rate of <10% ( 1 ). Surgical resection remains the cornerstone of management in early-stage BTC ( 2 ).…”

“…Despite the low incidence of biliary cancers, cholangiocarcinoma is the second most common primary liver cancer after hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), accounting for approximately 10% of primary liver cancers [ 1 ]. Although the treatment of biliary cancer has improved in recent years, long-term survival still needs to be improved, with a dismal 5-year survival rate of about 5% [ 2 ]. Biliary cancer can be related to chronic biliary tract or gallbladder inflammation owing to gallstone, choledocholithiasis, or primary sclerosing cholangitis, but the exact etiology remains poorly understood [ 3 ].…”
