Quantitative Method for Shape Description of Almond Cultivars (Prunus amygdalus Batsch)

Abstract: The aim of the present work was to propose a rapid, non-invasive, and quantitative image analysis method based on elliptic Fourier analysis (EFA) and on carpological measurements to discriminate between 18 cultivars and shape groups of almond kernels and in-shell fruit. The shape groups were identified using two clustering techniques: a non-hierarchic method (k-means) and a hierarchical one (Ward's method). Both methods found the same numbers of groups for in-shell fruit and kernels. The obtained results indic… Show more

“…Coordinates of landmarks were aligned by Generalized Procrustes Analysis, a procedure consisting of three steps: the translation of point coordinates to a common centroid located at the origin (0, 0) of a reference system of coordinates; the scaling of each outline with the unitary centroid size; and finally the rotation of coordinates to minimize the sum of square distances between correspondent landmarks (Bookstein 1991;Antonucci et al 2011). …”

“…the morphometric method was described in Milanesi et al 2011 andantonucci et al 2012. 2.3 DNA analysis ancient seeds were quickly released from the matrix by hcl and hF treatment, which cleaned and removed organic matter (Milanesi et al 2006), and subsequently exposed overnight to uV-light. specimens were immediately processed for dna extraction under controlled sterile conditions.…”
