Drought was a severe recurring phenomenon in Iraq over the past two decades due to climate change despite the fact that Iraq has been one of the most water-rich countries in the Middle East in the past. The Iraqi Kurdistan Region (IKR) is located in the north of Iraq, which has also suffered from extreme drought. In this study, the drought severity status in Sulaimaniyah Province, one of four provinces of the IKR, was investigated for the years from 1998 to 2017. Thus, Landsat time series dataset, including 40 images, were downloaded and used in this study. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) were utilized as spectral-based drought indices and the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was employed as a meteorological-based drought index, to assess the drought severity and analyse the changes of vegetative cover and water bodies. The geochemical changes in the sediments along streams make it possible to predict the processes on the earth's surface, such as weathering, transport, cation exchange, etc. The sediments can also give an environmental indication and the ability to understand the geological situation more clearly. In addition to the sediments being the main sink of heavy elements, they may be a source of pollution with these elements. The study area is situated on the eastern side of Mosul in northern Iraq. Valleys of (Al-Rashediya, Al-Kharrazi, Al-Khosar Al-Danffilli, and Al-Shor) descend from these high areas towards the Tigris River. The sediments of these valleys consist of various components, such as clay minerals, organic matter, iron oxides, carbonates, etc., and heavy elements that are part of or adsorbed on these components. Thirty-six samples were collected from the sediments of these valleys. They were chemically analyzed using the x-ray fluorescence technique to diagnose the chemical composition of these sediments. Several statistical processes were conducted to determine the distribution of heavy elements in the sediments, including the correlation coefficient and factor analysis, which resulted in four principal components representing 80.86% of the total variance. The first, third, and fourth components represent the influence of the weathering and transport factor on the different parent rocks, while the second component represents the human influence factor. The impact of industrial, civil, and agricultural activities on these valleys was studied using a set of pollution indices such as the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and the enrichment factor (EF). The highest concentrations were in Al-Danffilli valley, especially in the industrial sector, which means that these sites have high levels of pollution compared to other sites that were polluted at lower rates and sometimes not.

The surface water in study area supports a range of uses such as water supply, irrigation and hydropower generation. Therefore, the assessment and analysis of the hydrological drought are important in the planning and management of the water resources. In this paper, hydrological drought was assessed using stream-flow drought index (SDI) based on observed mean monthly stream-flow data collected from three selected gauging stations at Greater Zab River, Lesser Zab River and Khazir River located in the North-Eastern region of Iraq. Trend analysis of the hydrological drought was investigated using Mann-Kendall non-parametric method to evaluate the significance of trends and Sen\\\’s slope method to determine the magnitude of the slope of trends for 47 years during the period 1965-2011. According to the SDI 3, 6 and 12-month time scales, the recorded drought was severe, and M-K method showed that the decreasing trends in the SDI values were statistically significant at α=0.05 mostly in the Greater Zab River and Lesser Zab River basins, increasing trend in SDI values is insignificant. This indicates that the hydrological drought is increasing over time at the study area.
