“…As a result of the modern strong seasonality pattern of the Levant region, the δ 18 O of cave water represents mostly winter rainfall. For seasonal studies, this simplifies the evaluation of the δ 18 Occ records by removing the by omitting the summer's contribution to annual δ 18 Op variability (i.e., rainfall source seasonality [122,123]) and potentially avoiding δ 18 O enrichment following evaporation in the epikarst and karst reservoirs (as it is often reported as negligible in winter storms [86,98,114]). Consequently, the resulting speleothem record is strongly biased towards negative winter δ 18 Op.…”

“…The main rain-bearing systems on the south coast are ridges of the South Atlantic Anticyclone to the south of South Africa, which lead to advection and stratiform rainfall on the south coast, and the tropical temperate troughs that form when a continental heat low (or thermal low) links up with the westerlies to form convective cloud bands (Engelbrecht et al, 2015). A recent study of the rainfall isotopic composition in the year-round rainfall region indicates that considerable changes of rainfall δ 18 O (δ 18 O p , ~ 5‰) are related to seasonal variations in synoptic conditions (Braun et al, 2017).

“…Moreover, orographic rainfall occurs from local sources due to onshore flows related to ridging anticyclones (Weldon and Reason, 2014). The isotopic composition of precipitation (δ 2 Hp) is 2 H depleted during winter and 2 H enriched during summer periods, with a modelled annual mean of -13 ± 1 ‰ (Table 1) (Bowen, 2018;Bowen et al, 2005;Braun et al, 2017;Harris et al, 2010). Mean annual temperature is 17.6 °C and slightly higher temperatures during summer (22° C) lead to semi-arid climatic conditions at the study site today (Fick and Hijmans, 2017).…”

“…Voёlvlei (Braun et al, 2017;Harris et al, 2010;Strobel et al, 2020; Table 1). δ 2 Hn-alkane values from Voёlvlei are moderate from 8,440 +200 /-250 to 7,070 +160 /-200 cal BP, which imply a year-round precipitation regime, i.e., contributions of both Westerlyand Easterly-derived precipitation (Fig.…”
