“…Linear Raman scattering was applied to the measurement of temperatures and densities in combustion flames shortly after the availability of the laser. 3 Apart from the pioneering paper by Drake and Rosenblatt, 4 who used the rotational Raman spectrum of N 2 to measure the temperature, most of the work in those early days employed the less accurate procedure of fitting the contour of vibrational bands 5 -8 because of the much longer times needed to record the rotational spectrum with photomultiplier tubes (PMT). Bechtel et al 9 carried out a thorough study of a special 'flat' premixed hydrocarbon/air flame; temperature and species profiles along the gas flow were determined by Raman scattering and laser-induced fluorescence, and compared successfully with combustion models.…”
