Reaction time and anticipatory skill of athletes in open and closed skill‐dominated sport

Abstract: In sports, reaction time and anticipatory skill are critical aspects of perceptual abilities. To date, no study has compared reaction time and anticipatory skill of athletes from open and closed skill-dominated sport. Accordingly, the present study investigated whether a difference exists in sensory-cognitive skills between these two different sport domains. Eleven volleyball players and 11 sprinters participated in this experiment. Reaction time and anticipatory skill of both groups were recorded by a custom-… Show more

“…Passes represent a performance-relevant element in many team sports (e.g., Evangelos, Aristotelis, Ioannis, Stergios, & Foteini, 2014;Reed, 2004). They must be played in the highly dynamic contexts characteristic of interactive and open skill-dominated sports (Nuri, Shadmehr, Ghotbi, & Moghadam, 2013). In these contexts, passing opportunities continuously change as the positions of team members, opponents, and the ball are al-tered (Vilar, Araújo, Davids, & Button, 2012).…”

“…Other studies on the RT field have been conducted on different groups of athletes by SART software [23,39]. The results indicated that athletes have better RT compared to the controls [23,40].…”

“…RT and anticipatory skill were evaluated by SART software, which was installed on a laptop connecting to a 24 inch LCD monitor. The reliability and validity of this software had been already assessed [23]. The participants were seated in front of a monitor, and the examiner selected the RT and anticipatory skill tests randomly via the laptop (Figure 1).…”

“…Other results showed that there was no significant difference in whole-body reaction time and anticipation athlete's reaction time between kata and kumite. Karate athletes reaction speed in a study [7,8] obtained the results of the reaction speed and reaction anticipation kumite athletes average speed of 230 m.s. Karate athletes in the study had two stages of information processing when anticipating the enemy's attack, the third phase is to acquire information on the first movement and assessing the information to the target area.…”
