Recent approaches in nanocarrier‐based therapies for neglected tropical diseases

Abstract: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) remain major public health problems in developing countries. Reducing the burden of NTDs requires sustained collaborative drug discovery efforts to achieve the goals of the new NTDs roadmap launched by the World Health Organization. Oral drugs are the most convenient choice and usually the safest and least expensive. However, the oral use of some drugs for NTDs treatment has many drawbacks, including toxicity, adverse reactions, drug resistance, drug low solubility, and bioav… Show more

“…However, any possibility of selection of the parasites for praziquantel resistance or low sensitivity may hamper the 2030 target of global disease elimination. As a result, the WHO recognizes the importance of initiatives for the development of safe, affordable, and effective drugs for schistosomiasis ( 9 11 ).…”

“…7 Consequently, there is an urgent call for the development of innovative anthelmintic agents to address this pressing global health issue. 6,8 Natural products have long been recognized as valuable sources of substances with pharmacological properties, and among them, various metabolites with antischistosomal properties have been identified. Notably, neolignans are one such example.…”

“…Moreover, due to the neglect associated with this disease, there is limited pharmaceutical investment in exploring novel antischistosomal agents. , As a result, schistosomiasis has been targeted for elimination by 2030 in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) roadmap . Consequently, there is an urgent call for the development of innovative anthelmintic agents to address this pressing global health issue. , …”
