Recent progress in high-resolution functional MRI

Abstract: Real-time HR-fMRI as well as high-resolution anatomical MRI may emerge as indispensable tools for surgical planning, diagnosis of neurological diseases and targeting of deep brain stimulation.

“…A major impediment has been the small size of the structure, which is reported as approximately 32mm 3 per hemisphere postmortem [Ranft et al, ]; in vivo estimates put the figure closer to 18.5mm 3 per hemisphere [Savitz et al, ; Savitz et al, ], but this may be an underestimation due to the difficulty of resolving the lateral and anterior boundaries of the Hb [Lawson et al, ; see also Kim et al, ].
