Recent progress on biomass‐derived ecomaterials toward advanced rechargeable lithium batteries

Abstract: Biomass materials are of great interest in high‐energy rechargeable batteries due to their appealing merits of sustainability, environmental benefits, and more importantly, structural/compositional versatilities, abundant functional groups and many other unique physicochemical properties. In this perspective, we provide both overview and prospect on the contributions of biomass‐derived ecomaterials to battery component engineering including binders, separators, polymer electrolytes, electrode hosts, and functi… Show more

“…These scenarios can generate harmful consequence to the sustainable development of LIBs. Advanced electrode design and battery recycling technologies are urgently demanded to handle these problems 15,16 . It should be noted that the ultra‐long life is the basic to handle the sustainable dilemma of LIBs, which can reduce the materials requirement and cost in the full‐life cycle.…”

“…Advanced electrode design and battery recycling technologies are urgently demanded to handle these problems. 15,16 It should be noted that the ultra-long life is the basic to handle the sustainable dilemma of LIBs, which can reduce the materials requirement and cost in the full-life cycle. Higher energy density and more cycling times are helpful to improve the lifespan of LIBs, which are the research focus of current LIBs and has achieved great success.…”

“…Many researchers aim to promote LIBs to be safer, cheaper and more efficient through redesigning of cell components materials [291,292]. Lignocellulose sources have been exploited as not only porous carbon materials and binders but also as separators and electrolyte reservoirs in LIBs [235,240,293]. Some examples are summarized in Table 9.…”

“…Hierarchically structured carbon materials as the carrier of sulfur should be noted for offering good conductivity, cushion volume expansion, as well as confinement of lithium polysulfides [304,305]. Recently, the use of lignocellulosic biomass has presented remarkable performances in Li-S batteries [293,305,306].…”

“…A recent discovery of nature-derived aqueous carboxymethyl cellulose gels with self-healing properties is an interesting new avenue. [99,100] Table 3 shows some of the emerging flame-retardant battery technologies. Those with nonflammable liquid organic electrolytes offer performance characteristics that are more like existing lithium-ion batteries.…”
