Recent update on the prevalence ofVibriospecies among cultured grouper in Peninsular Malaysia

Abstract: Vibrio infections are common among marine fish and lead to serious problems in the aquaculture sector. This study reports a recent occurrence of Vibrio species (spp.) isolated from cultured groupers in Peninsular Malaysia using the gyrB and pyrH genes. A total of 147 Vibrio strains were successfully isolated from 77 (64%) groupers using culture method and subjected to gyrB and pyrH sequencing for species identification and confirmation. Results showed that 89% of Vibrio strains were identified and clustered to… Show more

“…Interestingly, other cultured fish species produced in the exact location, such as Asian seabass, snapper, and golden pompano, were not harmed. More recently, according to Amalina et al [95], the distribution of Vibrio spp. isolated from cultured groupers in Peninsular Malaysia was predominated by V. vulnificus, V. alginolyticus, and V. parahaemolyticus with 33%, 24%, and 22%, respectively.…”

“…Thus, vibriosis has remained a severe problem in Malaysian cultured marine fish since the 90s, resulting in significant economic losses. Total losses among Malaysia's three main grouper, snapper, and seabass culture species were USD 7.4 million in 1990 [95].…”

“…Vibrio sp. menimbulkan borok pada sirip (sirip geripis) (Ebi et al, 2018); Amalina et al, 2019). Vibrio sp juga dapat menimbulkan luka atau borok pada ikan (Desrina et al, 2006).…”
