Reconstruction of the Polarization Ellipse of the EM Field of Telecommunication and Broadcast Antennas by a Fast and Low-Cost Measurement Method

Abstract: Abstract-A low-cost measurement method for the extraction of the relative phases of the field of base station and broadcast antennas is presented. Our purpose is to determine the polarization of the field at a measurement site using magnitude measurements only. By determining six amplitude components using a spectrum analyzer, the polarization ellipse of the field can be obtained. This low-cost method can be used for outdoor measurements, which is not possible with network analyzers. Using this method and thus… Show more

“…The higher fields in Bornkessel et al 2008 can be explained by the fact that fields around specific 18 WiMAX base station sites were investigated. Exposures to the different signals are comparable to results in literature, but will not be discussed here in detail (Lehmann et al 2002, Joseph et al 2006, Neubauer et al 2002. Higher exposures to TV and radio transmitters are possible in specific regions (Sirav and Seyhan, 2009).…”

“…The polarization of an EM wave can be totally determinated when the amplitude and the phase of its electric field are known [5][6][7]. However, the techniques employed in commercial equipments for phase determination require the use of a setup composed of several equipments which have a low mobility, even for measurements performed in the far field region [8].…”
