Recovery and Purification of Tin from Tailings from the Penouta Sn–Ta–Nb Deposit

Abstract: A concentrate obtained from mining tailings containing mainly cassiterite and columbotantalite was reduced for the production of tin metal. The compounds CaCO 3 , Na 2 CO 3 , K 2 CO 3 , and borax were used as fluxes in the pyrometallurgical reduction smelting process, and graphite was employed as the reducing agent. The greatest recovery of Sn (>95%) was obtained when using CaCO 3 as the flux; the purity of Sn was 96%. A slag equivalent to 25% of the mass of the initial concentrate was produced during the reco… Show more

“…Interestingly, the C free amount decreased consistently with the increasing amount of Sn(Oct) 2. This can be explained by the use of C free for the carbothermal reduction of SnO x (formed upon decomposition of Sn(Oct) 2 ) at temperatures above 700 °C . This assumption can be rationalized by taking a closer look at the Raman spectra of the SiOC/Sn nanocomposites (Figure d) showing the well‐known D and G bands at ≈1350 and 1600 cm −1 .…”

“…Other Ta-rich minerals, such as microlite and wodginite, have also been reported [25,28]. A detail characterization of Penouta ore is described by Lorens et al, López et al, and Alfonso et al [26][27][28].…”

“…However, the small grain size of the Ta-Nb minerals at the Penouta mine, and their strong association with cassiterite, make it hard to obtain separate concentrates; new methods that can separate the Sn and Nb-Ta are therefore required. 8 The most used technique for the separation of both metals is solvent extraction employing different agents. 9,10 For example, Ta could be recovered by using a simple primary amide reagent.…”
